Is there any way doctors can predict the progression of hair loss ?

This is the most important question in day to day practice and almost every physician doing hair transplant in Pakistan, comes across several times in a day.  Keeping in mind few things, one can guess about it to some extent:
First of all the patient age really matters a lot. In common practice at a hair transplant Clinic in lahore, those who are between 14 to 30 years are highly unpredictable. By giving them false assurance they won’t get bald is a very daring job. Without any hair loss in early ages is not the guarantee they won’t get bald. Family history is another clue and very important while predicting hair loss, but still it’s not a very reliable marker. Exceptions are always there.
One can always predict the pattern of hair loss by just looking at miniaturization of hairs with high power magnification over different parts of scalp. For example if a patient is around 40’s and without any miniaturization of hairs than the chances to get bald are very minimal.but if the miniaturization is around 5% or more than he might gel baldness over that area with time. The age of hair loss vary from client to client and it can be prolonged by the use of Finesteride tablet over a period of couple of months.
In our clinic, FUE hair Transplant , Pakistan, we use high magnification microscopes for examination of early hair loss as well as hair miniaturization. By doing so, we can have an idea what will happen to these hairs in next few years. As discussed earlier, if the age of a patient is between 40 to 50 years and there is no miniaturization of hairs, than we can assure them its very unlikely to have hair loss. But if even less than 7% miniaturization is present , than there are chances to lose the hairs in that area.  One sign which is really helpful to guess tha hair loss is a simple look from top and look for hair loss pattern..if its u shaped and near to fringes than chances are high to get bald soon.

In summary, I think most patients in their late 20′s and early 30′s should be looking mainly for a framing of the face in front and not looking to have the crown/vertex in the back filled in.
